Excellent seafood! Great top shelf bar selection! Great service... I sought an "excuse" not to give them 5 stars... The croutons on my cesar salad were chewy and not crispy!!! HA! NO place should get a 5 star off the bat in a tourist town like this one... But they do! Ok, we had appetizers, a delicious chowdah - brothy and not gooey too heavy on the cream... An AWESOME chowdah where the veggie chunks are cut in such a teenie tiny way, one wonders if they brought in some sort of minion that can dice so teensie - but the celery and the potatoes are clear what they are, not chunky/clunky - just perfectly miniature dices! Chock full of veggies, clams and herbs, and you can taste the bacon... AWESOME. Their version of clam cakes (or clamby hushpuppies as I call them) are FABULOUS and so are the fried oysters - everything fried PERFECT. Top shelf poisons, great beers, nice wine list, and great service. Salad, chowdah bowl, 2 apps... beer... $48. AWESOME!

great food, and great drinks. my fiance and i came here this past weekend for mid-afternoon snacks and drinks. we started with the shrimp cocktail, and the shrimps were HUGE! we also got the clam chowder, which was very colorful and stocked with clams, potatoes, celery, and red pepper. i also got a nice side salad. i ordered my first drink, which was a delicious, sweet (and strong!) mix of raspberry and vanilla vodka, grenadine, soda and juice. i decided to order another one, since my fiance had only taken a few sips of his since he was concentrating on the shrimp. the second drink was amazing - it was almost a cross between a mojito and cucumber mojito. it was super refreshing and delicious. the service was also great, both bartenders were very nice and made recommendations for us.

The food is remarkably good, some of the best I've had in MV. I would give it 5 stars but we had to specifically ask for the 50% chowder discount despite the large signs out front advertising it (only between 5 & 6 and with a $10 purchase). I had the pork loin and it was cooked to perfection....the sauce was to die for! Or, at least to return for. The chowder comes in a regular version and a "light" version-no butter or bacon. I had the light version and it was just right! Good beer selection and a nice Bordeaux.

I'm a big fan of thick NE Chowder. And from NE im quite a snob about it too. I was a little bummed when I saw theirs was thin but when we started eating it was amazing. There was so much meat in the bottom of the bowl. This restaurant has wonderful food and great service. They had halibut on the special list, I am not a halibut fan but my husband is. We had so many apps we decided to get one entree to share. This was so juicy, tasty and just flaked off when you went to cut it. I would def go back here again.

JB is on the ball! MV Chowder Co is a must for dinner in Oak Bluffs. Meghan is great. She remembers my drink on every visit. The restaurant is large and very busy on weekends during the winter months so make sure to reserve a table for dinner. I had the steak, salads and a few of the apps on my visits and the food is great. Bravo JB!

I am only giving 3 stars because the "award winning chowder" is not a chowder at all; its more of a clam soup being that the broth is watery and lacks the comfort of a rich, hearty chowda. My entree - the scallops and risotto were absolutely delicious. In fact the yards of beer and all other food we had were delish. The fact that they call this the "MV Chowder Company" is why I am giving such an average rating. It may be worth offering a "Vegan" option which I think is totally oxymoronic as well as a standard, fresh clam chowder. In fact, for the namesake there should be several versions of chowder such as fish, corn and shrimp. The decor shows that money is not the issue. Step it up with the chowder and this restaurant is 5 stars.

WOW! We've been to many restaurants in Oak Bluffs over the years, but this was wonderful! The biggest thing that stood out to me was the service. Our server, Amy was spectacular. She was personable, had great recommendations, didn't hover, but was attentive. The atmosphere was romantic and the decor was great. The food was really good as well. We started with the chowder, which was tasty. It wasn't the thick chowder so many other places serve, but it had great flavor and was chock full of clams, potatoes, onion and bacon. We also tried their oyster shooters...we had the classic vodka ones and it was definitely an experience! I had the salmon with the fish cake and tzatziki sauce...the sauce added a unique flavor to the dish. My boyfriend had the scallops with the risotto and the scallops were so sweet and perfectly cooked. We topped off the meal with the Boston Creme Pie from their new dessert menu. AMAZING...definitely a wonderful way to wrap up.

Just like moms chowder! The chowder is light and delicious! Clam fritters were delicious too and perfect for sharing. The arancini were yummy too!

The food is average. Make a reservation because it does get crowded. I felt bad for a couple that had been waiting for a table long before we arrived and we were seated before them because of the reservation.

Walking around Oaks Bluff can make you hungry. We overheard a few people mention the Chowder Co. so we decided to make a stop, we timed our stop right on the money to get great seats right out front and with a perfect day what else could we ask for. Our waiter Eric was great taking care of us to a tee. We started with a big cold mug of beer and I started with a cup of the famous chowder of course. the wife had a special salad with fried chick peas. Really good. The chowder is not what I usually get it was a milk based with pretty much clams and diced potatoes. It was good and something different then the usual. We shared the pried tomato BLT. Home run. The fried tomato was a welcome change to the average sandwich I only wish it had more on it.

Absolutely delicious. We are coming back very soon. I had the filet and it was better than some of the fancy steak places I've been to in Boston. Cheers

My complaint was about the server and manager. I have eaten here numerous times and find the food can be very good, not great, very good. My problem is that many times the restaurant seems over crowded and the wait staff is in a hurry to get you out. The other night we dined with a friend who has a severe food allergy and had to ask many questions. The waitress, who's first language was not even close to English was very harried and didn't quite understand the severity of the situation. She refused to not bring the french fries with the steak and charged us $4 for three asparagus, which we asked to substitute for the fries. She also brought over our beverages that had to go back three times as they were not what we ordered. Also while reaching across us her hair would fall in a water glass which she removed and replaced after asking three times. The Manager came over and was not very helpful at all. He made it clear that he wanted us out as well and was very dismissive of the food allergy issue. Also made no attempt to compensate or apologize for the terrible waitress, just saying something about her just coming here from VERMONT!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously!!! All in all a terrible and annoying evening at this restaurant and next time we will find a much better restaurant where they appreciate the business!

The chowder was great. Less creamy than I'm used to but the bowl is full of clams and the taste is great. The meal was good, service good

  • Rebecca W.

Meh. What is described on the menu is not necessarily what you get, and prices are a bit high for the food quality. Server was pleasant enough. My Dining buddy says the chowder is nothing to write home about either.

Tenderloin was "lights out". Salad "baby greens" was Very GOOD. I know I'm going against grain here... but the only reason I gave a 4 star was... I like my clam chowder with a little more body in the broth. I've had better mixed drinks as well. I'm being very picky here. I WILL definitely be back again.

A wonderful addition to the landscape! They did a beautiful job designing this new restaurant, which just opened in July. They had at least 3 chowders on the menu. The traditional New England Clam Chowder was the best on the island. The corn and crab chowder was equally delicious. And, they had clam cakes! I spent the good part of 8 years craving these delightful clam fritters, which only exist in southcoast Massachusetts and RI. Until this summer, they were nearly impossible to find on the Vineyard. MV Chowder has their own take on this traditional fritter - they call them clam chowder choco's. I'm partial to the traditional version, but these certainly satisfy a craving and were tasty. There is a great selection of local beers on tap. The bartender is an artisan in his own right, whipping up innovative concoctions including his home-made ginger beer. I'll be coming hear for Dark and Stormy's! This place is not to be missed.

I Love the MV Chowder Company! I've been there a couple times and have never been disappointed. The Chowder is light and creamy with out missing any of the components that constitute a perfect chower. I had a friend visiting for a couple days and we were on a mission for the perfect chowder and lobster roll, we found it here! Chef Alex Nagy applys richness and nuance to old favorites in an unpretentious yet polished way.

Went out for dinner here last night for a nice romantic/relaxing dinner and was THOROUGHLY disappointed. We were seated next to a large party of 14 people and our waitress rushed us to place our order telling us she wanted to get it in before their order. Bread came, immediately followed by chowder and then our app. As SOON as we finished our app our dinner was out. The waitress asked us how everything was and my response was that I was RUSHED and I was not enjoying my dinner. Clearly she must have told her manager who proceeded to come over to our table and I explained to him that I felt rushed and was not enjoying my meal because I had no time to enjoy it. He asked if we wanted to slow things down. I asked him how at this point could we slow things down?? We'd already received out bread, soup, app and meal??? I wasn't going to have him take it away. And his reply was have a great evening AND HE WALKED AWAY. (ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?) what a HORRIFIC manager he is. The slowest and longest part of the night was waiting for the bill. We're they trying to slow things down at this point?? All we wanted to do was get the hell out of this place. After dinner I approached the manager and told him I was VERY unhappy with his response and our entire experience. IF he had any class he would have told us at the table that he would have looked into the timing on our meal and apologized that we were unhappy and maybe offered to comp our app or throw in a free dessert. All he did was stand there with his arms behind his back acting like he was above me...let's be serious now! Paying $33 a plate to deal with the asshole of a manager was a complete waste of time and money. I would NEVER recommend this place based solely on the service and behavior of the manager. I can't even comment on the meal because there was no way I could enjoy it.

Very bad chowder. One of the worst in Cape Cod. So watery and tasteless. Too much celery. Service was good and quick.

I have visited here twice and for the most part have been satisfied. Its a great atmosphere and I am so glad its open during the winter. The first time I visited I got the cod wrapped in prosciutto and was very disappointed. The cod lacked flavor and was overcooked but I thought I would go back again to give it another chance. I ordered the chicken breast this time and it was delicious but for some reason my fiance ordered the Cod again and forgot that I had a bad experience with it. He was hoping that it was just a fluke when I ordered it. Once again it lacked flavor and was overcooked. The service was great. Yummy bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar to start. Loved the Chocos. My sisters got the burgers and said they were good. Drinks were good too. I love the cucumber martini. I guess I suggest to go here but don't get the Cod :)

Voted best chowder on island, so I tried it out. Pricey but good. Bartender was super nice and attentive.

I came into this restaurant for a quick snack, during a crowded, bustling summer day on the Vineyard. The Littleneck clams were outstanding, very meats, and loaded with briny goodness. Now the Clam Chowder was a real stunner, which is advertised as "the best Clam Chowder in New England." It was rather runny, had a very mild, bland taste, and contained bacon, which actually contributed more taste of the soup than the actual clams. While it did indeed contain many clams, they were extremely chewy, something associated with canned products; I was truly surprised. Service was friendly, and notably quick.

Great service and a great spot to people watch. The chowder is really good, not as creamy as my personal preference, but excellent nonetheless. Great drinks. I will definitely be back. The person at the next table was raving about the lobster rolls also.

The traditional chowder was nothing to write home about. It was average. The drinks are tasty and original, but the food did not impress us- especially for the prices. I had the cod with gnocchi and the gnocchi should l not be called gnocchi and the cod did not present much flavor. Even the ginger creme brûlée was just okay. I would not go back.

My husband and I ate here while vacationing in Martha's Vineyard. We got there just before the busy season started when they had a special from 5-6pm for half price chowder with a $10 purchase. Apparently they ended this special a few days later when we finally decided to eat there, but when we asked about it they said they would honor it anyway since we knew about it. The staff was very friendly and attentive, my water glass was never empty, always a plus. My husband got their New England Clam Chowder, which he said was excellent. I decided to try their house specialty clam chowder, made without flour so it's a little thinner without the roux base, and also without bacon which I try to avoid due to the nitrates. I wasn't sure how I'd like it since I normally like the thick, rich chowders, but OH MY was it GOOD! I tried a spoonful of my husband's and actually liked it better than his (but he also liked his better, so to each his own, heh). Seriously some of the best chowder I've had, and I've had many. For an entree, my husband got their special which was fish (haddock) and chips. It was delicious!! The fish was so meaty and flaky. Really good. I got the cheese tortelloni with shrimp, which was also very good. There were five shrimp in the dish and they were all huge. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting the Vineyard. You won't be disappointed.

Great addition to Oak Bluffs. Extensive menu - lots of seafood (including raw bar options) and a few steaks. Reasonably priced wine list. Though I didn't have any, there were several kinds of chowder on the menu as well. The interior is a bit too dark and I was disappointed that the restaurant didn't keep doors/windows open - I was dining there on a gorgeous night and it felt a bit depressing to come in from the outdoors. But no complaints about the food. My dining companion loved the shrimp fettuccine and my skirt steak was perfectly cooked and served with just the right amount of seasoning - not enough to overpower, just enough to bring out the flavors. I believe owner is the same guy who owns Sharky's.

Went with a party of four for dinner- my most lasting impression is of the chowder. Go with the thin "gourmet" style, it was the best, and the one that apparently won some kind of award. Full of tender, fresh clams, and finely diced celery and onion. The bread was super hot- it actually steamed when I broke it open, so they definitely get extra points for that too. Service was just ok, but I think they are still ironing out some kinks, so I'm not deducting a star for that. Drink service was a little slow, but they did come eventually. We also had to get up and ask for a pepper grinder after the chowder was served. They should be offering cloth napkins during dinner service, with the prices being asked. I know it's an extra expense, but paper napkins felt tacky. The entrees were well priced, and contrary to the previous reviewer, I thought definitely generously portioned. My boyfriend got the prosciutto wrapped cod, which he thought was a tad overcooked, but still pretty good. He had a theory that they may have overcooked the fish in the attempt to crisp the prosciutto. His parents got the tuna- it was seared perfectly, accompanied with sauteed spinach and these little fried eggplant nuggets in a sweet soy-based sauce. Dad mentioned the sauce was a tad sweet for his liking, and I concurred. I had the scallops with risotto. I loved the fact that the corn in the risotto was so crunchy as a textural contrast in the dish, and there was an herb oil drizzled around it that was subtly licorice-ey in a really nice way. The scallops themselves were seared well, with a nice translucent inside, but they were REALLY salty on the outside- enough to distract me from the freshness and succulence of the scallop . Overall, I think the chef is decisive and intuitive with his flavors, but needs to scale back on sugar and salt just a tad, and let the essence of the sea take main attraction on the plate.

I went to MV Chowder last week to celebrate a special occasion with 15 friends and family. Before I left to go to the vineyard (a month ago) I called to make a reservation. They no can do. It was illumination night (a big night in Oak Bluffs) and we arrived in plenty of time to have a relaxing dinner. Imagine my surprise when they let a party of 40 reserve the entire restaurant (no, they were not all there waiting which means they had a reservation). I spoke to the manager. He could care less and it did look like a BIG wad of cash in his front pocket! So I just wanted to let everyone know to visit the ATM before going to this restaurant.

Very disappointed! Had tried their chowder at Christmas in Edgartown this year and had high hopes for this restaurant. Went for lunch. . .ambiance nice and we thought we discovered a new place to go on the Vineyard. Place was empty at 12:30 - not a good sign since other restaurants in town were packed. We soon learned why - food was not good. Their signature chowder was terrible. Very salty. Everyone at our table agreed. We are usually not complainers and debated even mentioning it, but I said I would rather tell the chef than just never come back. We told the waiter and suggested he have the chef taste it. Rest of our meal was mediocre. Waiter came back and said he had the chef taste it and he agreed it was salty, that two people before us had also complained and the chef threw the whole pot of chowder away. You would have thought they might not charge us for the terrible chowder, but that did not happen. We left, literally, with a bad taste in our mouth, never to return.

the clam chowder is tasteless, watery and worst of the kind. Dont bother to go eat there if you looking for something good. The lunch menu is a joke. My friends and I were taking a lunch there, the food are very bad in term of quality and taste. I would rather go to McDonald if I can pick again.

This place is exactly what you'd expect in a bustling fish town. Great oysters, great lobster rolls, and a couple side dishes that are fantastic. Roasted peppers are great!!! Service is perfect and the atmosphere is superb.

Went here during mid-August on a family vacation. Oak Bluffs is amazingly beautiful with plenty to do and eat. Now, I love chowder, but this place serves 'Chowda'. It was phenomenal, seasoned great and piping hot. Our waitress was amazing, constant flow of drinks and appetizers. We eventually got to entrees, where we got the roasted chicken, lobster ravioli, and pasta for the little one. All were perfectly prepared. Couldn't have asked for a better place to dine. Will definitely be back next year!

One word- chowda!!! Yum. We were there with a group and pre-arranged menu but ended up enjoying everything from the salmon and Spatz to the brownie a la mode. Great stop on the vineyard!

I can see why they won the chowder award! Yes, it's New England style but it's much lighter than others. It's nice and thick with clams, veggies and just the right spices! Try it! Let me back up! Before the chowder you'll have toasty warm rolls! Nice touch. The baby arugula salad was fresh, just the right amount of goat cheese and the cranberries were nice and plump! Not your usual craisin. The lighting is a bit too dark for my taste. Yes, your eyes will adjust but come on! The walls are filled with the appropriate boat art. Service was very accommodating.

  • Kameron S.

We came for the chowder, but discovered their fish and chips to be excellent. I don't like overly breaded or battered fish and theirs was perfect. Their tartar sauce was really great too. The chowder was pretty good and had lots of clam and potatoes in it. We'll definitely be back the next time we're on the island. :)

Chowder Co has the best chowder on the island. The atmosphere is upscale and can make you forget your on the island. It's sends you to upscale Boston or NYC. We met the owner and JB was most accommodation with his staff. You will have to have a cup of chowder and the lobster ravioli. OFF the HOOK!! Do yourself a favor and have a visit!! You will not be disappointed.

This place has great food! My family and I dropped in here after taking the ferry into Oak Bluffs that morning and touring the town. Conveniently located near the center of the town, the restaurant wasn't too crowded and we were seated immediately. The interior was superbly decorated to match the vibe of the island. I ordered their lobster roll and clam chowder, which were both delicious, as advertised. The clam chowder was extremely fresh although a little on the salty side, and the lobster roll was a buttery mix of perfection. However, I did think that the food was a little bit on the pricey side given the quantity, but I suppose that's the price you pay for location and decor. In terms of service, the waitresses were really on top of it, and were really helpful in according my little brother, who has pretty severe food allergies. (Incidentally, he go their ribs and absolutely loved them.) Will definitely come again the next time that I'm in the vineyard!!

    (4)
  • Charles D.

The clam chowder is definitely amazing. Definitely much lighter than most clam chowders, but it had a good amount of veggies and clam in it, and a great taste to it. We had about 9 people in our party and everyone enjoyed their food, as most of us had the biggest lobster roll of our lives. Would definitely recommend eating here when visiting the vineyard.

It was late afternoon, the dining area was very dimly lit with a fire going (even though it was warm outside). We were grabbing a bite before catching our ferry. Our waitress was friendly and informative; service was very good. My husband loves clam chowder and ordered it almost every meal. MV Chowder House's version was the Best of the five chowders he had tasted this week. No roux was used so it was thin (unlike the others) but it had the highest ratio of clams to potatoes and the best depth of flavor. The other four chowders were sampled at Quicks Hole Tavern, Seafood Sam's, The Lobster Pot and Larsen's Fish Market. Their Sweet Chili Wings were good but a little pricey at $12.

GREAT FOOD & ambiance but disappointing, SHODDY SERVICE. If I was rating on food alone, it'd be four stars for sure. If rating on service alone, it'd be two. Food - excellent. Lobster roll (although expensive at $26) was very good. Hot, buttery, delicious. Bread was well buttered and toasted. Had a unique flavor - believe they added some lemongrass. Came with fries - pretty good as well. Clam chowder was also good - hearty. My friend's fried shrimp was fantastic - succulent and perfectly battered and came with an amazing spicy mayo of some sort. Drinks - my friends enjoyed their cocktails. they had a pretty good beer selection (lots of IPAs) and offered flights x5. Their flight paddle was only made for 4 glasses however so they brought the fifth glass precariously balanced on the handle. Thought this was odd and not particularly smart. And my thoughts were validated when we were leaving and the waitress or bus girl dropped the extra glass on the table and it broke. Ambiance - nice place with a classy looking bar. Service - their downfall. We came in and were seated promptly. It was not busy at all. A few minutes passed and no one came by. We saw another group sit down a table away from us and they were immediately approached by a waitress. Still, no one came to us. We looked around, very obviously. We made eye contact with the hostess. Still no one came. An unacceptable amount of time went by before someone actually came to take our order. The waitress was really friendly and I asked her a few questions about the flight and then placed my order. She immediately began to walk away, not asking the two other people at my table what they wanted to drink. WTF? I called her back obviously. We only ordered 3 drinks, one lobster roll, one order of shrimp and one clam chowder. She forgot the clam chowder so that didn't come out til the end. She was nice so I feel kind of bad saying it but it wasn't good service.

Chowder was definitely excellent! I would return for the chowder alone. Service was great. We sat outside and enjoyed watching people go by, admiring some of the amazing cars that cruise this street and the sunshine. I also had the warm lobster roll, which is a hot lobster sandwich, not a lobster roll (lobster rolls are cold with mayo on a buttered toasted roll). I know opinions differ on that topic but a lobster roll is cold with mayo. A "lobster salad roll" must come from New York where they also think clam chowder has tomatoes in it. Warm lobster is awesome and butter only makes it better but if you put it on any type of bread it's a hot lobster sandwich. That's that! Anyway, about the hot lobster sandwich at MV Choco, it's very good. Plenty of lobster which tastes fairly fresh, good amount of butter, excellent bun. If you like your lobster served this way then MV Choco is a great stop. I'll be back.

This place has the BEST clam chowder I have ever eaten before. It is not as creamy as others, and the soup and chowder ratio is perfect! The fish and chips are even good, perfectly fried, and not too oily in my opinion. Their spicy shrimp skewers also had a lot of spices and flavor in them. Everything we ate was great and I would definitely come again for their chowder! I would suggest their cocktail called impossible dreams, if you are more into fruity drinks. It was very good and the vodka was masked in the sweetness. Great service and it seems to have a dark and romantic setting, making a classy restaurant. It is in the perfect location, right next to the Oak Bluff ferry, so it would perfect catching the ferry to get off the island. Overall, great service, great food, great ambiance, and I would gladly come back again!

This was excellent. I only gave 4stars due to the loud atmosphere. The food was excellent and the customer service top notch. We were there with a party of 7 for a special birthday. The restaurant staff were attentive to our needs and assisted with bringing out our cake and singing. I highly recommend MV chowder!

OMG fantastic. Its just off the the Ferry. We had raw oysters, fried oysters and chowder. The oysters were creamy and so fresh. The clam chowder is hands down... the best i have ever eaten in my life. Our server. Princess was super sweet and manager Eli was great to talk to. We thoroughly enjoyed our our lunch. Don't miss it.

The food, although overpriced, was decent. We ordered a Lobster roll with bacon. We also ordered the clam chowder (bowl) and fish and chips. Everything came with fries (maybe the only side available?). The main problem was the service. We had to ask several times to have water refilled (it was a warm day and we were parched). They also kept returning to try to remove plates but not fill up our drinks or ask if we needed anything. I think your money is best spent elsewhere on Martha's Vineyard.

Great spot right at the end of Circuit Ave. Chowder was great, as the name suggests it should be, the steak skewers were awesome as were the arincini. My wife and I went around 9:15 and the vibe inside was great though we chose outdoor seating to check out the passers by. Red wine was served almost warm, maybe the glass had just come out of the washer. My beer was ice cold though. Good place to grab a bite.

Went for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. First impression is how dark the place is! There weren't many other customers, and our group of 12 was seated quickly. The chowder was ok. Very thin, too much celery, and too few clams for my taste. $9 for a cup was a bit excessive, even for the island. The fish and chips were likewise, ok. Only one piece of fish, on some very thin fries for $14. A kids meal was $9 for grilled cheese and a drink. Summary - ok food. Good service. High prices.

Put this on your list when you're in Martha's Vineyard. Sit outside and people are watch or hangout inside at the bar. Either way, the food is delicious. We had the chowder, lobster roll, and fried oysters, which came with a yummy side salad. I'm only giving four sides instead of five because the service outside was slow as I tried to get one more visit in before catching the ferry.

Home made chowder soup, cute waitress, Lots of drinks. Just too dark feels like a bar. And price is fine.

Would rate this place about average, nothing overly good. It does not have many options on the menu. Prices are close to average for the island. The wait staff was very good however. They were very attentive and quick to help. Never had to worry about my water getting low. Lol

Don't forget to check out this classic spot in Oak Bluffs. The chowder is great as are many of the dishes that I've tried.

If I could give it zero stars I would. I'm 25 years old and they accused me of having a fake id, aka "my older brothers license." They asked me for four forms of alternative identification, when they were proven wrong, they yelled at me for having "attitude," and wouldn't give me my drivers license back. They were disrespectful and degrading. I ate here for two years before this with no problems, but this year they proved to hire over-eager rent-a-cops as bartenders, and they've lost my business for good. If you want an authentic oak bluffs experience, go to cope deville or Nancy's. If you want actual good clam chowder, go to the quarterdeck in edgartown.

Drinks were very good. The chowder was very tasty and the oysters were clean, big and very tasty. I'd come back!

Disappointed to say the least. The restaurant is clean and looks rather nice with faux fireplaces and abstract photography prints. The place was empty for the lunch hour which always makes me a little nervous. We had a party of 11 and the waitress seemed as though she had it under control until the wait for the food was forever and she disappeared while we waited. The chowder was average which was sad to say. The fish and chips were amazing along with the fries that accompanied the meal. The waitress lost my respect after she spilled a full container of ketchup on my niece's lap. Not cool. The auto gratuity was not cool either as the waitresses services was not good. She didn't have to work as she was guaranteed a graruity. Again not cool and she could care less about the spilled ketchup. Will pass next year on this place even though the fish were excellent and the chef's did a great job.

Went and got the chowder for lunch. I had high hopes based of the name of the place. I like the atmosphere, as it was a nice bar with Some outdoor seats and in a good location. However, the chowder was very average. It was loaded with vegetables clams and potato, but was rather bland and the broth was very watery. It wasnt bad. But it wasnt anything special.

This place has excellent chowder and an excellent lobster roll - honesty one of the best. For parents, the chicken fingers are wonderful as are the fries. Everything is homemade which is refreshing.

5 stars for the Clam Chowder, believe me we have been sampling a lot of chowders in the past 3-4 days on the island. But it is also pricier than others, a bowl $11.

Came in during a busy summer night, and they were able to seat us without a reservation in less than 10 minutes! Cheerful staff made the experience delightful, and the romantic ambiance was perfect for date night. Their clam chowder was some of the best I've ever had in my life, and the grilled swordfish with dill sauce and mashed potatoes was to die for. Definitely recommend!

Best lobster roll I've ever seen. Not for the price but great lobster pieces and quality bun. The chowder was awesome yes the inside was very very dim but we opted to eat outside and it was a great experience. Wonderful staff and efficient

Best restaurant this trip! Why? We checked out all of the restaurants in Oak Bluffs, and this is the best. Great swordfish, oysters, handmade pasta and, of course, lobster rolls and sushi. Extensive bar and tenders. Cool, comfortable seating. Excellent and attentive waitstaff. Don't leave MV without checking this place out.

Good..... Not outstanding. I have definitely had better chowder. Great blistered Shisito peppers and a huge portion for $7. My halibut was excellent but everyone else seemed a little underwhelmed with their food. Order the oysters as its a nice presentation and great mignonette. Drinks were nice but again, not knockouts .

Read any of the reviews for this place & you'll know to get the clam chowder. It was absolutely delicious & the consistency was just right - not super thick but not watery either. They've got prime location too which makes it that much more tempting to stop in & have a bowl...or two.

They had really fun oyster shots. We stopped in for appetizers and clam chowder and it was really delicious. For the price though, I don't think I would go back. It was average food at expensive prices,

This was my first visit to Martha's Vineyard Chowder Company. The chowder was delicious and filled with a lot of potatoes, celery and clams and very filling. It was by far the best chowder that I've ever eaten. I definitely plan to visit again next year.

  • Mark S.

Wonderful lobster roll. Even though I typically prefer it with mayo, this one had bacon, chives and butter on a toasted roll, and tasted great. The clam chowder was a broth base and a bit different from the typical being a bit thinner. Yet it was also very good and hearty. My wife got a fish sandwich and fries, which she enjoyed as well. Service was great. I could definitely see us coming back.

Hands down this is the BEST LOBSTER ROLL that I have ever had and no place since has compared to it. PERIOD. Martha's Vineyard Chowder has set the standard of all lobster rolls. I keep trying other places to replicate and no one has even matched the quality or size of this lobster roll. Delicious. Plenty of lobster meat ...prepared perfectly. I was not disappointed. We had amazing, attentive and friendly service as well. My visit was for lunch in late May

  • Varun B.

The chowder here is something to definitely give a try. It's super meaty, full of clams. Also has a nice creamy texture without being overly creamy. We also had the arancini, though that wasn't as great -- the risotto was just too dense.

My wife and I saved MV Chowder Co. as the culmination of our 26th anniversary visit to the Vineyard due to the recommendation of our B&B. OMG were we disappointed. The chowder had minimal lobster flavor, bland with a bitter flavor that I associate with shallots, but it could be something else; nonetheless, bitter. We then had the fish and chips and Lobster & Mac. We immediately sent the fries/chips back because they were overly salted. The Lobster & Mac was "bleh!" Seriously, I had been eagerly awaiting this dish before I went. It sounded delicious, but "NO!" It in fact tasted largely of salty pork (due to the pork lardons) and gritty breadcrumbs and a "bleh" bland flavorless sauce (béchamel or perhaps we should rename bléh-chamel) and pasty orecchiette. Let me be clear, the bland sauce was so overwhelmingly bland and pasty that w could not taste the lobster, which is why one orders this dish, for the lobster. We returned it after only about three - four bites. I wish we had done the same with the chowder and fish and chips. When the fries returned minus the salt, we found the entire dish also to be incredibly bland. One expects some crispiness from fish and chips, but no; and again, flavorless. Our bill came to $40.66. We tipped our waiter on the full bill (including the dish we returned as it wasn't his fault that the food was dreadful), so that made $50.66 for a perfectly dreadful restaurant experience, our final evening in the Vineyard. Fortunately, my wife and I have withstood far greater challenges in our 26-years than this disappointing rip-off of a meal. I gave the manager feedback and he wasted no time in blaming it on my taste buds. A classy guy! In closing, I'll mention that we had lunch at the Menemsha Fish Market in Chilmark that afternoon. It was outstanding!!!! The Lobster Roll was crazy delicious!!!! Forget this loser singles/sports bar pretending to be a restaurant (MVCC) and go have your entire Vineyard seafood dinner at Menemsha Fish Market.

Parking is tough outside but once inside your greeted by a very nice team of hostesses. I wife and I went for dinner we had about a 15 minute wait for table. Once seated I let our server know we had a time constraint and everything moved at an accelerated pace but relaxed. Our server was knowledgeable and very friendly. This was preceded by fast service at the bar; my wife had the signature clam chowder which was spectacular! The best clam chowder we've ever had! This was filled by a light broth and plenty of clams and goodies inside! My appetizer was marinated & spicy grilled shrimp, which was amazing, accompanied with arugula greens, dill pickles with amazing tasting pickled onions! My grilled swordfish was an average size portion with capers infused in my mashed potatoes. My wife had a steak with asparagus which was succulent. The overall decor was very upscale clean and neat. We will definitely return on our next visit to Martha's Vineyard

A nice spot- I can't speak to all of the food but the Caesar salad and fries were pretty good. It's a little expensive but it's not ridiculously expensive. I sat outside and it was very nice. Someone in my group ate the chowder and said that it was very good but very thin.

I first went to this restaurant last year in November for an engagement dinner. Everything was delicious and the portions were reasonable. We returned again early this summer, ordered the same meal, and left hungry. We are 2 small women and rarely finish our plates! 3 spears of asparagus are not a side to anything- it is a garnish! If the food was amazing and unique, small portions could be delectable and savory. However when the food is just good, then the chef should focus on satisfying the customers with a full stomach.

AWESOME!! From start to finish, we loved our experience. Great drink, fabulous service, food was fantastic. All four of us loved our dishes. My lobster roll was awesome. Princess, our waitress, could not have been more accommodating and friendly. Marc, the manager, came to our table to be sure we were satisfied with our food and dining experience and all four of us were appreciative. The desert, a chocolate concoction, was indescribable but glorious.

Our service was AMAZING! The food not so much. Ordered seafood risotto and asked for no calamari and was told that wasn't possible. I was disappointed but said ok I'll just pick it out. Food came pretty quick but the taste was not on point. And it just wasn't just my meal it was my sisters meal also. The manager did come over and comp our meals and was VERY apologetic. We probably wouldn't go back unless it was just drinks because those were on point!

Expected a mediocre tourist trap but was quite surprised by everything we ordered. Excellent chowder (not thick style), extremely good flavor. Light & fluffy fish and chips and a great burger. Great fries too!

  • Kristine G.

The location is great and they utlize space well, but their clam chowder is so different. To my taste, not good. It had too many flourishes that chowder just shouldn't have and it was watery... I may be old fashioned, but their chowder is not the best on the island.

  • Bryant R.

This is really a great place. Despite the dark, bar vibe this is an excellent restaurant. I've tried the namesake chowder which was flavorful and delicate. I have also tried the fired oysters which were very well prepared. The prosciutto wrapped cod was very prepared very nicely with excellent ingredients. The vegetables served with it were moist and crisp and after the fish was gone there was a lovely broth that they could probably serve as a soup on its own. The only drawback is, my personal pet peeve, that they give you a disappointed look if you ask for salt. Otherwise, the service was excellent. Three people asked me how my meal was.

After wandering around for a bit trying to find a place that could accommodate 10 people, and was showing the Bruins game, we settled on the MV Chowder Co. The decor and ambiance are great (although dark, and somewhat loud) and we loved the fake fire in the fireplace. The waitress was super nice and very understanding. I was a bit picky with my order and she didn't bat an eyelash. She also repeated the LONG special list twice - once at each end of the table - so we could all hear it. My coworker & I split the Baby Arugula Salad (Sliced Apples, Goat Cheese, Candied Walnuts and Citrus Vinaigrette), which was huge and could have easily been a meal in itself, with some protein added. The vinaigrette was a bit thicker, and not as sweet, as expected, but the salad was great. Although everything sounded great, I went with the Butternut Squash Risotto, but I got chicken instead of Scallops. The risotto itself was a bit bland and the chicken was dry (which, I get it - it's usually scallops). Apparently the scallops were delicious. I did try my coworker's bacon-wrapped cod, which was light, flaky and not fishy at all. I do not eat fish and I went back for a second bite! My husband's All-Natural Pan Roasted Chicken Breast (Truffle Plum Butter Sauce, Smashed Potatoes and Green Beans) was AMAZING. I wish I'd gone with this! The rolls were buttery & soft. Some butter to put on them would have been even better, but the balsamic mixed w/oil was great (I could have used more!). Overall, we were all very happy with our meal. It was expensive - $83 for the risotto, chicken & salad, including tip, but with no drinks!

I've grown up spending weeks each summer on Cape Cod with my family and then six years ago I met my fiance who has family in Edgartown and I've been fortunate enough to add another week each year to my time spent on The Cape and surrounding islands. This was listed somewhere as having the "best chowder" on The Vineyard for a few years in a row. We decided to pop in on the afternoon of 6/20/14 to try the chowder. It is advertised as not having any flour or butter. After the first few bites, my fiance and I, along with the family behind us, all agreed that was a terrible thing to advertise. The soup had great ingredients, but was all watery, so that they sat at the bottom of the bowl in a lump underneath a water/cream broth. My fiance then bit into a clam shell and almost chipped his tooth. We are easy going, but he is a chef, so he wanted to give our server a "heads up." He very nicely showed the server the shell and the response was (and I quote), "Oh wow, that was in the soup?" We said yes and that we just wanted to alert them. The response was not even a sorry, just an "okay," here is your $25 dollar bill for the 8oz and 11oz bowls of chowder with shells in them. Needless to say, we weren't impressed with the quality of the chowder or the service. In all fairness, this is the only item that we tried. However, we won't be going back for more. My advice is to head to The Seafood Shanty in Edgartown or Home Port in Menemsha for a real chowder and amazing views! Or even the MV Steamship Authority chowder! Not sure who they paid for the rating, but this is not real New England chowder!

This place makes me feel like the arch-nemesis of clams, but why, oh why are you so tasty??? Fantastic clam chowder, definitely not the creamy type I'm used to, but the best on the island and incredibly flavorful. Also happy to find my favorite Angry Orchard's cider here and lots of great beers on tap!

Me and my wife came to marthas vineyard on a sunday and we decided to eat here. We had the risotto balls for an app since they were out of housemade ricotta, they were pretty good. I had the fried chicken sandwhich with cranberry, gravy, and mash potato. It was good just needed a little more seasoning. Overall it was good, nice atmosphere.

This is a very welcome addition to the OB dining/ party scene. Let's hope it stands the test of time. This location has never managed to hold on to a business for too long, but if anyone can pull it together, it's JB, who also runs Sharky's in OB and Edgartown. It's a dark, loud and bulky space, very centrally located with an eclectic, if somewhat expected, menu. And what's best? Like both Sharky's locations, it is open year round. If you know the Vineyard in the winter, you know how terrific that is. The space is gargantuan and cavern-like. Nothing intimate about it. The long bar runs down the left, with tables all around and in the back. It's loud. We have found the bar tenders to be friendly and efficient. Once you grab a bar stool (if you are lucky enough to find an empty one), the bar tenders are right there. They'll even whip you up a custom made cocktail. There are lots of tables- this has to be one of the largest dining spaces in OB. You can find just about anything on the menu from burgers and salads to mussels and swordfish. If you have special dietary needs or requests (no cheese, for example), they are great about accommodating. Service is smart and professional. The upstairs space is a huge party room for dancing and partying. You can rent the space or head on over on a Saturday night for a fun time. I am not sure how Vineyarders made it through the winters with any level of sanity before this place opened up. It offers good food and great fun.

I have Celiac Disease, which means I need to follow a GF diet. Unfortunately, the number of restaurants that can accommodate this dietary restriction is sadly limited on Martha's Vineyard. MV Chowder Company offers a GF clam chowder, which was delicious. I also got the Farm Fresh Tomato Salad (I think that's what it was called?) which was basically a stack of tomatoes and mozzarella with balsamic reduction, which I liked even more than the chowder. It's great that this restaurant offers this chowder and a few other options (salads and beef skewers), but it would be really nice to see them offer some other choices (why aren't the risotto balls gluten free? Hopefully they aren't using flour as a cheap thickener), especially given that it is a pricey restaurant that should be able to alter more of their dishes. Good start!

Loved the gluten free, no butter, no flour Clam Chowder!!! Tons of clams and very light cream!!! Clams could have been a little more tender. Had the Fish & Chips - had a whole piece of fish that was lightly battered. I have to say the best fish strip I ever had!!! My girlfriend had the fried oysters and she loved them!!!

    (5)
  • Jill S.

Clam chowder was so full of clams and celery. Taste was delicious and broth not too rich. Some in our group preferred a richer broth. They wanted to get a quart from the other place to mix with this one! We got take out cuz our view beats the dark open restaurant with no view. Convenient to the oak bluffs ferry. We parked for a few minutes at the package store/gas station two doors away which was pretty convenient for picking up takeout. I asked for the Choco fritters that were on the yelp menu but the staff had no idea what I was saying. Maybe a bad cell connection or the menu is wrong. Not sure....

  • Mary M.

Coming off a roasting hot day on the strip, the cool and elegant atmosphere of the Chowder Company took me in immediately. I was initially put off by the thinness of the clam chowder, but the flavor is absolutely and inarguably delicious. I did sample the lobster roll, and for maybe a couple bucks more than the average hot-dog-bun fiasco, you're awarded a goddamn slab of buttered, toasted bread, with a glorious heap of lobster stuffed into it. I highly recommend it to a group of two to four adults, as with drinks, it can be an expensive meal, but one worthy of all its stars.

Went here on a weekday during September, just the right amount of tourists, sat outside, had a great view of the whereabouts of the town, Oysters for appetizers were very fresh, somewhat small to medium (compared to those on Macs seafood place at P-town), the lobster roll was delicious!! I'd go back. Service was great but note they were not busy, so this one will vary.

    (4)
  • Dana R.

I love good clam chowder and this place has it. The seafood risotto was not good by any stretch of the imagination though. The scallops were prepared well but the dish was bland. The service was as bland as the risotto, which mad for a less than pleasant experience having to grab passing staff to get more water, butter, pepper, etc. good ambience and good location.

Find a high boy table in the back with your best buddies and settle in for a great dinner. We were there in November on a stormy night but the place was still busy and the service was still great. Literally the best lobster roll I have had in years and that means a lot since I grew up on the cape and still live on the South Shore. Big huge chunks of fresh lobster, toasted roll, great fries too. Waiter recommended and he was right. Good, lively atmosphere too, great bar if you are looking for one which we have enjoyed several times over the summer.

This place can do it all. We ate at a few restaurants on the island and this seemed like the closest to doing fine dining that we found. Had a seat facing the kitchen and was happy to see a clean well run kitchen. The food was excellent. Gus who ran the raw bar made sure we were happy with the fresh oysters. My fish was delicious. Had the chowder too. Some people wish that it was thicker, which I can understand, but you can hide poor ingredients a lot easier in a floury broth and this tasted fresh. If you want to come in and have drinks and watch a game the bar looks nice too. Overall, a little step up in class than most of the joints on Circuit street.

Always a pleasant greeting when you come in the door of the MVChowder Co. Then the fun began. Went over to the bar area with a friend and ordered a drink. It's always nice when you have a bartender that can carry on a conversation with you and is good at what she does. Meghan (gh) was just that bartender. Never had to worry about an empty glass with Meghan around. I'll be back...

Hands down, the best chowder I have tasted in years. Outstanding. So good that frankly we just dined on a bowl each of their phenomenal chowder and ate local oysters on the half shell. Entrees be dammed. Keep it simple like their chowder. Fabulous bar with outstanding service. Rounds it out

  • Erika S.

Very dark inside, more of a bar feeling than restaurant, lots of tvs Ordered Mule and Sangria: tasty Warm rolls with oilve oil and balsamic-ok Pasta of the day (mushroom ravioli) was rich but too salty Swordfish was excellent Caesar had too much dressing Award winning chowder tasted fresh but is thin and the potatoes are diced rather than chunks with lots of clams. Having worked at Boston Harborfest on Chowderfest and sampled the best, I prefer a thicker chowder. To each his/her own....

I planned to go to the Red Cat but they weren't taking reservations so I turned to Yelp for help in finding a suitable substitute and I found Martha's Vineyard's Chowder Company. The food and service was first rate from beginning to end. I glad that folks steered me this way. 2 Thumbs up!

    (4)
  • Ken S.

I can only speak about the chowder as that's all I tasted, but it was great. It's different than most New England style chowders in that it isn't thickened with a roux (flour & butter), but is still very creamy and loaded with clams. It's an expensive bowl of soup, but worth it.

    (5)
  • P-Funk O.

Do you know what sounds good. Prosciutto wrapped fresh cod, potato gnocchi, artichoke hearts, sweet corn and lemon butter sauce. Do you know what is crap. Overcooked cod wrapped in prosciutto, sitting on a bed of elephant grey canned artichokes, bland corn (I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say it was fresh... but far from sweet), potato gnocchi (while not handmade, they were fairly light and fluffy) and a sauce that was neath lemony or buttery but did resemble dirty bath water. If my wife had finished her steak, I would have gone home hungry. The clam chowder touted no cream or flour as a thickener. It had more of a runny consistency but I was fine with that. The chowder tasted pretty darn good. Good thing when you're named Chowder Company. The restaurant had a nice ambiance and the wait staff was great. Closing thoughts. If you are going to charge me that much for a meal, it shouldn't have canned anything on it. I realize they are on an island, but still, just take it off the menu.

  • Lisa K.

First time in months and months that I've said "WOW". Our dishes were well prepared and delicious. The oysters, Portuguese balls, filet mignonette (perfectly prepared) and Oysters - Yummy! The manager, delightful and professional. Thank GOD they have flame cages out front, otherwise most tourists easily walk by. Service from all the staff was friendly & knowledgable. CONS - I will say the desserts were the only things that were just good, although creative. TIP: also ask to sit away from the kitchen window, as it is very bright and distracting for romantic dining. There are many nicer spots in the dining room. This restaurant & bar is trendy and stylish environment. Worth a try so go check it out. I can't wait til they have their new restaurant open next to the Mansion House in Vineyard Haven.. It's to have a pan-Asian flair. I'll be there.

This place has been written up alot. I went excited to try the "cho-cos" they were exactly as described but I won't be ordering them again--they aren't my thing. However, the mussels were fantastic. They were fresh and the sauce was so good I ordered more bread to soak it up. Deeee-li-ciousss! The fish was expertly prepared, moist, succulent, a good portion too. And I think the whole meal was made better by the attentive staff. They are well versed in the menu, are good, honest souls, and want you to have a nice experience. The atmosphere reminds me alot of a nice dinner spot in NYC--a class act without being boring or stuffy. They really do a great job creating an environment where you feel special, hip, and well fed. Well worth the price.

REALLY delicious chowder. wow. It's not thick like some cheapo versions, but it's still really creamy. And everything is minced up, which I surprisingly loved. Probably the best chowder... I have ever had.... I can't believe I just said that. eek! Everything else about dinner was pretty solid as well. I had the salmon and it enjoyed it. Didn't blow me away but it was still really good. I loved my dirty martini, and the bloody mary oyster shooter was fab. The service was really good, too. Our waiter was super cute (seriously) and super nice. The only complaint I had was that the hostess was kind of a pain in the butt. There were so many tables available and she wouldn't let us sit. So we sat at the bar and she probably came over 800 times to update us about where she was going and what she was doing. It's like... just come over when you're ready to seat us, allllright? Other than that.. I definitely will come back!

  • John Z.

This place was great! Service was excellent, we sat at the bar and ate. We got the chowder which was perfect and very hearty, the homemade ricotta cheese was tasty, the swordfish was perfectly cooked and the mashed potatoes with capers was delightful. My girlfriend got the steak skewers, and needless to say we both cleaned our plates for every order. I would highly recommended!

  • Food L.

Service was great, but food was average. The chowder was average in my opinion. I've had much better. The lobster roll, however, was pretty good. They are fairly generous with their portion, but then again, it was kind of pricey, too. The pizza was not worth trying - what a terrible idea. I don't know what I was thinking. All in all, slightly overpriced, average quality food.

Fish 'n chips were tasty and the homemade tartar sauce was excellent. Service was good. The bartender even put the basketball game on in the midst of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

So, my family and i dont eat pork but are huge fans of clam chowder! It was insane how difficult it was to find bacon/ham-less chowder!!! Finally we were told this place has the best chowder on the vineyard AND is pork-less... yay! We ordered two large clam chowders to go so we can sit by the water. They were ready in about 15 mins-we walked to the boat yard and luckily the chowder was still piping hot. Rating is based only on the chowder: 4 stars, not 5 because it really did taste like the "diet" version of chowder. But regardless it was delicious! Great experience.
